Mixed Martial Arts is a combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions as well as in self-defence applications. It has somewhat marked a revolution within the martial arts since it emerged in popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the
Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The concept of combining the elements of multiple martial arts was pioneered and popularized by Bruce Lee in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Lee, who started his martial arts training with the study of Wing Chun Kung Fu, believed that "the best fighter is not a Boxer, Karate or Judo man. The best fighter is someone who can adapt to any style."
There are no belts, forms or gradings within MMA, the idea is use whatever physical and psychological weapons are available and to apply them to any given situation. The training contains elements of various martial arts styles such as Boxing, Kung Fu, Judo, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, etc.
